One of the riots most remembered from this time were the Chicago riots of 1968. These came about shortly after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. On April 5, 1968 African Americans began to quickly flood the streets of many major cities including those of Chicago. Both the South and West sides of Chicago experienced the worst damages due to the high population of African Americans in those areas. As in the Detroit riot, similar action was taken such as arson, robberies, and vandalism. 36 major fires were set, 125 fires set total, and 210 buildings severely damaged. By April 6th there were around 10,000 police and national guard in Chicago trying to get the riots under control.
